In a surprising parade of emotions, Íman combines joy, tension, explosion, friendship and care. In the rhythm of a modern "batuko" we are seized by the surrender of these bodies to dance, by the contagious strength of women. In Íman, the Wonderfull's Kova M, Bibiana and Rosy show how beautiful this interweaving of different cultural experiences is.
An artistic creation in the Cova da Moura neighbourhood
Filipa Francisco has sought to deepen her reflection and research around the social and political function of Art. Reaching out to the audience and moving artistic work to spaces that increase the possibilities of this confrontation is something that Filipa has experimented with. In a letter she exchanged with choreographer Idoia Zabaleta in 2005, she wrote: “If I could build a space for a body to move, what space would that be? Building a space or using existing ones, placing them like mushrooms or viruses on vacant lots, in peripheral neighbourhoods like Cova da Moura or next to large theatres seems to me to be an interventionist and political act”. (September 19, 2005)
Filipa has participated in artistic creation projects with incarcerated people and with youth in the process of social rehabilitation. Recognizing this experience and motivation, alkantara invited her to coordinate a long-term contemporary dance training and creation programme in the Cova da Moura neighbourhood.
The Nu Kre Bai Na Bu Onda project
Íman is part of the project “Nu Kre Bai Na Bu Onda” (in Creole ‘We want to go with your flow’) of Programme Escolhas — an initiative for the social and urban requalification of the Cova da Moura neighbourhood. NKBNBO is a project for training and skills development in various areas such as sports, music, dance and theatre, to be carried out over 3 years in partnership between Associação Cultural Moinho da Juventude, the Buraca Parish Council, Associação de Solidariedade Social do Alto Cova da Moura and alkantara — responsible for artistic training programmes in the areas of theatre and dance.
The challenge was launched to the group Wonderfull’s Kova M — made up of young women who have been meeting weekly for about 2 years at Associação Cultural Moinho da Juventude around their love of hip hop and African dances — to reinforce the existing dynamics in the neighbourhood around dance.
